Giljays

By John Sheather

My bedroom  (Cherwell House) was right above Giljays and as a youngster I would sit in my bedroom window and listen to the music blaring from the Giljay's stall on a Saturday afternoon. Folks would dance in the triangular area in front of the store.  "Max at the Met" was a crowd favourite (Max Miller).  Years later I volunteered as a DJ at Whittingdon Hospital in Highgate and Joe Giljay would lend all the records to play on my "show".

What sort of time was that John. I worked at Giljays in Pimlico mainly but used to go and cover at Church Street occasionally. That was in the early 80's and I never knew much about the history of the shop but I'm assuming you're talking about much earlier. We didn't sell many Max Miller records when I was there!

I lived in orchardson st from 1980 to 1996 and would visit Giljays every week sometimes a few times . The lady there would order and reserve records for me

The guys who worked never seemed to be very friendly bit I must have spent a fortune there !!! Great memories of the 80's.
