Memories of a hundred year old family stall on Church Street

By Georgina Colbeck

Every Saturday we used to visit my nan and grandad in Frampton Street, Stanfield House and later were moved down to Dicksee House in Lyons place, Mr John Henry (Jack) and Amy Emily Townsend. Nan used to cook up a wholesome dinner for me and my two sisters. As we became old enough, me and my older sister Jackie would work every Saturday on our dad's salad stall in Church street with our auntie Eileen.Tommy Sewell and Beatrice Sewell were the pitch names and Tom being our Dad and Beatie being our nan. I can only say that this experience enhanced our lives tremendously! We met the most amazing people from all walks of life. Can honestly say that Church Street was one of the highs of our childhood. The stalls were in our family for 100 years my Dad's dad, another Tom Sewell being the original owner. Long live Church Street!
