Businesses on Lisson Grove

My grandfather lived at 123 Lisson Grove, where my father was born in 1912. Grandad Jack Turner had horse-drawn Hackney cabs, and had stables in the mews behind the house, which runs into Church Street where Jordan's used to be. He used to stand on the cab-rank at Marylebone Station. He used to rent stable space to the coster-mongers for their donkeys, and when he got motor cabs, he kept his horses and rented them out to the local undertaker. My Dad remembered having to black up all the white markings on the horses with boot-black!

My dad Bert Waters and his twin brother were born at 121 Lisson Grove, also my grandad worked all his life at Marylebone Station.

I was born in 165 Lisson Grove in 1947 and lived there for 6 years. I used to have a friend called Brian who used to call for me. He used to sit on the doorstep and call out my name Jean until he was heard then we would go round the corner to Taylor's and buy a penny lolly. I wonder where Brian is now.

My great grandfather William Sanders & his stepfather William (Minchin) Fisher ran a cab company in Lisson Grove about 1846 - 1881.  I found references to their living at #30, though the street numbering has changed twice since then to #45 and then again to #90 in the 1870s.  I'm not sure where the actual cab company would have been located (here or elsewhere) & if it has a business name - perhaps someone can help.  Interestingly the 1846 Post Office Directory shows David Fisher, also a cab proprietor, at this address that would help my research.  Thanks
