Although Church Street Market has a long and illustrious history in modern times it has struggled to maintain its presence as London has pulled into the 21st Century. However this will all change with Westminster City Council planned regeneration scheme for 2010.

Westminster City Council's Civic Streets scheme is coming to Church Street Market and will bring with it a range of improvements that will ensure that market traders, shoppers, tourists and residents benefit from a traditional London street market with 21st century facilities.

“The bustling market that used to be. There were so many stalls that it took ages to get from one end to the other. We had five butchers shops and five chemists. It was always such an exciting place to be in. At Christmas time it was beautiful-lots of lights on the stalls and in each shop window (an electrical exciting atmosphere).

I can remember the smell of the Christmas trees that stood next to the stalls. People would be milling in and out of the butchers buying the meat for Christmas. I used to go down with my pocket money to buy my nan yet another set of salt & pepper pots to add to all the others I had bought her previous Christmases.
